Our Handcrafted Furniture-Making Process
Every piece we build starts with a raw slab of walnut and ends as a functional work of art made to last generations. At 5K Wood Works, craftsmanship isn't rushed — it’s a careful, hands-on process where every cut, every sanding pass, and every drop of finish is done with intention. This guide walks you through how we transform natural hardwood into premium, heirloom-quality furniture.
Choosing the Perfect Slab
Our process begins with selecting premium black walnut slabs. We source pieces with rich grain patterns, natural character, and structural integrity.
What we look for in a perfect slab:
• Strong, stable hardwood with minimal internal stress
• Beautiful grain flow and color variation
• Unique character elements like figure, knots, or sapwood
• Proper moisture levels for long-term durability
The right slab sets the foundation for a stunning finished piece.
Flattening and Preparing the Wood
Once the slab is selected, we flatten it to create a perfectly level surface. This ensures stability, prevents rocking, and makes the finishing stages flawless.
Our flattening methods include:
• CNC flattening for precision
• Router-sled flattening for larger or uniquely shaped slabs
• Manual planing for minor adjustments
After flattening, the slab is trimmed, squared, or shaped depending on whether it will be a live-edge or straight-edge design.
Detail Sanding for a Smooth Finish
Sanding is where the true beauty of walnut begins to reveal itself. We work through multiple grits to create a buttery-smooth surface.
Typical sanding progression:
• Coarse grit to remove machining marks
• Medium grit to refine the surface
• Fine grit for a silky, touchable finish
By the time sanding is complete, the slab is smooth enough to reflect light across its grain.
Stabilizing Cracks, Voids, and Live Edge Areas
Walnut slabs often include natural imperfections — and these are part of what makes each piece unique. We stabilize these areas for beauty and longevity.
Stabilization methods:
• Black or clear epoxy fills for voids
• CA glue for small cracks or surface checks
• Hand-shaping live edges to maintain natural contours
These steps preserve character while ensuring long-lasting strength.
Applying a Premium Finish
We use high-quality hardwax oils to bring out the depth and color of walnut. This finish enhances the grain, adds rich warmth, and provides durable protection.
Why we use hardwax oil:
• Natural, matte finish
• Easy to maintain
• Enhances grain without plastic gloss
• Safe for indoor use and food-safe when cured
The finish is hand-rubbed and buffed to create a natural, luxurious look.
Base Installation and Final Assembly
Once the slab is finished, we install the legs or base. Customers can choose from:
• Modern steel legs
• Black metal bases
• Minimalist wooden legs
• Custom welded designs
Every base is installed with precision hardware to ensure stability and longevity.
Final Inspection and Quality Check
Before any piece leaves the shop, it undergoes a full inspection to ensure:
• Smoothness across the entire surface
• Secure, level base installation
• Proper finish cure
• No rough edges or imperfections
• Perfect overall presentation
Only then is it ready for delivery or pickup.
